General Appearance

Lethargy, excessive sleepiness, or unresponsiveness

Sudden or persistent confusion

Inconsolable crying or extreme irritability

Limp, floppy, or very weak
Breathing

Rapid breathing or very slow breathing

Difficulty breathing (e.g., chest indrawing, grunting, nostril flaring)

Blue or grey lips, tongue, or nails
-
Pauses in breathing or gasping
Circulation

Cold hands and feet with mottled skin
-
Pale or bluish skin tone
-
Fast heart rate or no detectable pulse
-
Severe dehydration signs (no urine in 8+ hours, dry mouth, sunken eyes)
Fever & Infection

Fever > 38°C in a baby younger than 3 months
-
Seizure or convulsion during or after a fever

Rash that does not fade when pressed

Signs of a stiff neck, sensitivity to light, or a bulging fontanelle in infants
Vomiting & Diarrhoea

Persistent vomiting (especially green or bloody vomit)

Severe diarrhoea with signs of dehydration

Vomiting after a head injury
Feeding & Urination

Refusal to feed or drink for several hours

No wet nappies/urine for over 8–12 hours

Persistent projectile vomiting in infants
Seizures or Fits

Any new seizure, especially if prolonged or not stopping

Repeated seizures in a short period
Injuries or Accidents

Suspected broken bones, head injuries, or loss of consciousness

Severe bleeding or burns

Poison ingestion or suspected overdose

Dr Shaista Kalidas, a registered paediatrician with the HPCSA (Reg. No: MP0841625, Practice No: 1239945), offers paediatric home consultations within Johannesburg and surrounding areas, subject to availability and clinical appropriateness.
All consultations are conducted with the same professional diligence and ethical standards as would be expected in a clinical setting. Medical records are securely maintained in accordance with HPCSA guidelines and South African law.
By booking a home consultation, the parent/legal guardian consents to a home-based consultation and acknowledges that certain diagnostic or emergency interventions may not be feasible outside of a formal healthcare facility. Referrals or follow-ups may be advised if clinically necessary.
Home visits are strictly by appointment. Emergency care is not provided. In the event of a medical emergency, please contact your nearest hospital or emergency service provider.
Dr Kalidas reserves the right to decline a home visit where it is not deemed safe or clinically appropriate.
